My grandparents went to Mexico every year. They brought back several Tonalá animal figurines and I distinctly remember pondering them for what was probably too long. Those big eyes are so spooky but the cobalt blue was really comforting. This vase brings it all back. I love that little toucan.
The ceramic production in Tonalá, known as the authentic mestizo ceramic is symbolic of Mexico's identity. Made of burnished clay or scented clay, these artistic objects are created for ordinary and decorative use. The tradition comes from the Tonalteca group.
Measures 10-1/2" tall and 6" across at the widest point (3-3/4" across the top and 3" across the bottom.
In beautiful condition but there is some glaze missing on the bottom edge.
